Pendorya Shopping Center is located on the E-5 highway, in the Pendik industrial development zone. The main criteria used in determining the design and forms are derived from the buildings particular location. Selected as the winner of the invited competition, the executed project offers a piazza sheltered from the commotion of the E-5 highway.
Envisaged as a busy venue catering to different activities, the piazza is anticipated to become the new point of attraction for the new settlement following the transformation of the former industrial zone in the area. Changing on each floor around the massive structure that also carries the roof, the planimetry provides a variable internal cavity, which creates diverse perspectives and reinforces the visual connection between the shops.
The piazza in the courtyard of the roof visually enhances the food court areas, whereas the shopping center functions as a passageway between the two piazzas. The building is designed as a singular, massive object that responds to the jointed mass of the other shopping center across the road, as well as the segmented development in the surrounding areas. Taking into consideration the intensity of the surrounding highway traffic, the façade is designed with a logo-strip that easily catches the eye. Glass panels cover the ground floor façade, whereas custom-made, precast concrete panels with patterns dress the upper floors of the façade. Both long-term maintenance and visual coherence is thus achieved through this solution.
